Community Interests

Camphill Village USA (Parent, volunteer, contributor). Camphill Village USA is an intentional life-sharing community of 230 people (some with developmental disabilities) in rural Copake NY. Village life includes a wide variety of jobs, a rich social and cultural life, and a stimulating and supportive environment. My wife and I live nearby and often participate in village life as volunteers.

Holleran Center for Community Action and Public Policy, Connecticut College (Advisory Board, 2002 - 2012). The Program in Community Action and Public Policy (PICA) provides a multidisciplinary sequence of courses and internship experiences designed to help college students learn, through direct involvement, how non-profit community service organizations are created, managed and funded, and how they can help communities engage and support individuals with physical, developmental or economic challenges. I was PICA's founding dean, and continued in an advisory capacity there until my retirement in 2012.

Heritage Farm (Co-Founder, 1984; President 1984; Treasurer, 1895 - 1995). Heritage Farm provides day habilitation services and overnight respite for approximately 70 developmentally and multiply challenged residents of Madison County, NY. Programs are based on rural agriculture and are designed for people who are interested in farming, working with animals and in gardens.

Madison-Cortland Arc (Board of Directors 1972 - 1995; Director Emeritus 1996 - ). This organization provides services to people with developmental disabilities and their families. While I was an active member of the Board, Madison-Cortland Arc grew from a single special education class to a multi-faceted organization providing housing, education, day habilitation, occupational training, counseling and employment, recreation and family support services to many hundreds of people with developmental disabilities.
